The EQ mapping system is part of the Legacy of Ykesha expansion. If you do not have the LoY expansion you will only be able to view maps in a few zones. This system will enable you to see a map of the zone you are in and where you are in the zone. It will also highlight specific points in the zone. LoY maps comes with most cities and newbie zones already installed. To get the maps of all of the other zones you will have to download them and install them into your EQ maps folder.
This is a easy process that I will walk you through. First got to EQ-Toolbox and download the maps. Once you have done that unzip the file and open the folder.
You will now need to find your everquest directory. This is usually in C:/Program Files/Sony/EverQuest/maps/
Copy and paste or drag and drop the text files from the unzipped folder into the maps folder in your EQ directory.
Once you have done this you will have maps of nearly all of the everquest zones. I say nearly because there are several zones in EQ where you cannot use the map feature. There is no known way around this at this time. You will know these zones beacuse when you try to use the map feature it will pop up and display "Mapping not available for this zone." Here are the zones that will not allow maps:
Plane of Air
Plane of Earth
Plane of Fire
Plane of Fear
Plane of Hate
Plane of Mischief
Plane of Time A
Plane of Time B
Plane of Water
Sleepers Tomb
Temple of Veeshan
Vex Thal
Maps are only as good as the person who designed them. Most of these maps that you have downloaded are very well made and quite complete. But with new expansions such as LDON and GoD, maps can be incomplete. These maps are created by fellow EQ players not Sony so the quality and accuracy may be off.
Using the Maps:
It is easy to use the maps in EQ all you have to do is hit the backspace key to bring up a map of the zone you are in. A window will appear with the map of the zone and a arrow showing where you are at in the zone. The arrow will display what direction you are facing. This makes getting around anywhere very easy.

You can zoom in and out on the map by using the middle scroll button on your mouse. If you do not have the scroll button on your mouse you can use the + and - buttons on the right to zoom in and out. The direction buttons will let you pan in 4 directions. You can set the height filter if you need to know where you are in a dungeon where there are tunnels over top of each other.
You will also have a toolbar where you can edit and label your maps to customize them. This is very useful when you are going to a specific spot over and over and it's not marked on your map. You can open the toolbar by clicking the icon in the bottom right corner of your map.

This will open the map editor toolbar. There are tons of things you can do with this toolbar.
In this lesson we will mark a spot on the map so that you can return to it later. Once you are at the spot you want to label you can select the 'Add Label' tab on the toolbar. This will cause a window to pop up.
In this window you can type the name of the label, choose the color and size of the text. When you are done you will see the label on your map.

Once you have placed a label on your map be sure to hit the 'Save Map' button on the toolbar. This will save the edited map.
